Water and Ethanol as Refrigerant Mixture Enabling Adsorption Cooling below 0 °C

Adsorption chillers can avoid two types of greenhouse gas emissions from conventional cooling technologies: energy-related by utilizing waste heat and refrigerant leakage-related employing the natural water. However, water restricts minimal temperature to its freezing point. To overcome this limitation, herein, a boiling antifreeze in adsorption is proposed. For purpose, databank over 12 000 molecules for suitable antifreezes screened ethanol derived as best candidate. Employing antifreeze, experimental feasibility lab-scale chiller demonstrated: prevent at –5 °C and, thus, extend operating range chiller. Thereby, favorable properties be partially retained. Furthermore, water–ethanol mixtures pure 10 are compared: maximal coefficient performance (COP) specific power (SCP) decrease 45% 42%, respectively, when 14 mol% used instead Herein, influence on adsorbed mass transfer during evaporation crucial.
